Winter, in many parts of the United States can be a difficult season but, in Santa Fe, it’s always fun, at least for us! We look forward to snowstorms in the mountains so that we can go downhill skiing, cross country skiing or snow shoeing. And, at the lower elevations (6,000 to 7,000 feet), even if there is some snow on the ground, we love hiking and exploring new terrain during our “slow” season. Under New Mexico’s amazing blue skies with her expansive mountain and desert vistas, it’s great to be outdoors! Come join us this winter and participate in some, or all, of the events we are offering during the 2nd Santa Fe Winter Fiesta (January 27th – February 5th). We would love to show you how fun winter can be. On Saturday, January 28th, 2012, join us for breakfast at Tia Sophia’s in Santa Fe followed by an …

Come join us this winter and participate in some, or all, of the events we are offering during the 2nd Santa Fe Winter Fiesta (January 27th – February 5th). We would love to show you how fun winter can be.

On Saturday, January 28th, 2012, join us for breakfast at Tia Sophia’s in Santa Fe followed by an Adventure Tour at Puye Cliffs. Tia Sophia’s, located at 210 W. San Francisco Street, off the historic Plaza, is a popular destination for locals and out of town visitors. Founded in 1975, this family-owned business serves up a delectable array of New Mexican dishes. Plan on meeting us at Tia Sophia’s at 8AM to enjoy their Saturday special (the Chorizo Burrito), a Breakfast Burrito (available meatless), Huevos Rancheros or the Atrisco Plate (chile stew).

After a scrumptious breakfast, we’ll drive to Puye Cliff Dwellings, a National Historic Landmark site. Located on Santa Clara Pueblo land, you’ll get to visit a spectacular complex of abandoned ruins where a community of Tewa speaking pueblo Indians once thrived. There are dwellings that extend for about a mile along the cliffs of volcanic tuff and, at the top of the mesa, are the ruins of a multi-storied village. Puye Cliffs offers visitors an opportunity to appreciate the culture and history of the pueblo Indians who lived here between 900 and 1580 AD, and to soak in the views of the surrounding mountains. What we treasure most about Puye Cliffs is that, along with us as guides, you will get to tour this special place with a native from Santa Clara Pueblo, someone who can offer insights into the pueblo way of life.

While it may be cool in January, as long as there is no significant snow fall on the ground, Puye Cliffs is an awe-inspiring destination. Dress warmly, bring your cameras, your sense of adventure, and join us for a Winter Walkabout!

Each and every season is special in the City Different, offering a multitude of special events and outdoor activities. Winter is no exception. December is a magical time of the year as Santa Fe decks itself for the holidays. Many of the city’s adobe buildings are decorated with farolitos, small brown paper bags filled partially with sand and illuminated from within by a tea light candle – Santa Fe’s version of Christmas lights. Several of the neighboring Indian Pueblos celebrate the winter solstice and the New Year by holding dances mid-December through early January. Winter (December – March) also brings much excitement for avid skiers and snowboarders who flock up to the Santa Fe Ski Basin. The snow here is amazingly soft and powdery – it’s a delight to ski down the mountain, savoring the views under brilliant blue skies.

Many of the hiking trails at the higher elevations are covered by snow – great for snowshoeing, cross country skiing and sledding. For those not wishing to don ski gear or snow shoes, there are snow-covered but passable trails at lower altitudes. We also offer an exciting selection of scenic winter tours. Whatever your desires, your private guides at Santa Fe Walkabouts are ready to provide you with unforgettable moments in New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment.

I have been raving about Georges and Santa Fe Walkabouts since I returned home on Sunday! I came to NM specifically to hot air balloon, but, without a doubt, the hike that Sue set up for me was far more awe inspiring than anything I saw in the air! I love how they took the time to customize a hike based on my desires and abilities - you just don't get that service anywhere. Georges was an absolute treat to spend the afternoon with! He is a walking encyclopedia - I was so impressed with his knowledge of the area. Whether a seasoned professional or a casual nature lover, you should definitely set up an adventure with Santa Fe Walkabouts. This is how you truly experience the beauty that is Santa Fe!"- Michele, Minnesota

"I went to Santa Fe seeking interesting and exhilarating hiking in the area. Thanks to Georges and Sue of Santa Fe Walkabouts, my vacation was all I had hoped for. Their knowledge and love for the area is evident. The hikes were carefully planned to ensure my enjoyment as well as my comfort and safety. Thank you Georges and Sue."- Pearl, Toronto, Canada
